Toronto Industrial Flat Roofing - EPDM Roofs

Do you have an EPDM roof that needs an inspection?

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

One of the most popular commercial roofing options is EPDM roofing. Epdm roofing systems are lightweight and simple to install. It is a single-ply membrane like TPO and PVC made of synthetic rubber which has been improved over the years so that current EPDM roofing systems are incredibly durable, tear and highly puncture resistant while maintaining flexibility. EPDM roofs have superior resistance to extreme heat and fire, and ultraviolet radiation.

This type of roofing system is applied using a fully-adhered glue system, loose-laid with gravel or mechanically fastened. None of which require an open flame. The use of adhesive and nails to install results in the environmental benefits being reduced emissions from the amount of equipment needed to install it, there are fewer petroleum based product s and less landfill waste.

When proper insulation is used EPDM can also help to reduce your buildings heating and cooling costs.

Some argue that this type of roofing system is not the most aesthetically pleasing but then that is generally insignificant to a building owner. Alternatively, this type of roof is available in different colous like white grey or black and it can be manufactured in wide rolls to minimize the number of seams.

Single-Ply roofing systems are ideal for retro-fits because it costs less than a complete re-roof and is les intrusive. The job just needs to be done professionally.

EPDM roof systems are typically installed in one of three methods:

  • Mechanically attached - This provides a lightweight, cost-effective solution with the roof membrane is affixed to the structural deck utilizing mechanical anchors.
  • Fully adhered - The system is applied by bonding the membrane directly to the affixed insulation board or other roofing membrane substrate.
  • Ballasted - Using large sheets and 10 to 12 pounds of rock ballast to hold the membrane in place, this roof system can be the most cost-effective due to the ease and speed of installation.

EPDM is a synthetic single-ply rubber that is one of the most popular roofing choices for flat and low slope roofs. An EPDM roof provides great resistance to wind, ultraviolet radiation, temperature extremes and damage from hail, ice and other potential penetrating agents. Any damage can be repaired quickly and easily. Most EPDM membrane roofs offer a service life that can exceed 25 years.

Roofing membranes made up of rubber have the integrity to hold up over years of thermal cycling, inclement weather, extreme UV exposure and the ability to stay flexible at cold temperatures. EPDM sheeting is also highly puncture resistant, tear resistant, possesses superior tensile strength and is reflective/refractive to UV rays.

An EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) membrane is essentially one large piece of rubber, cut to size for your job. The rubber roofing membrane can survive all forms of weathering, and has been successfully tested to withstand wide ranges in temperature.
